The Amazing Race Deserves HD

In a world filled with low-concept garbage reality shows, one 11-time Emmy winner stands head and shoulders above the rest. Yet, for some reason, that show has big black bars on the left and right sides of my screen.

This week’s season premiere featured stops in the US, Japan, and Vietnam, and garnered 10 million viewers. Visits to 6 more countries are planned for this season. This is precisely the kind of programming and ratings the Discovery network would trade the firstborn son of Mike Rowe for. Despite that, the Race continues to languish in low definition.

Consider this: Deadliest Catch is one of the most successful reality shows on cable, and Discovery sinks a serious amount of resources into outfitting each ship with multiple HD cameras, and a human camera crew on board as well. All this and almost none of the equipment survives at the end of the shoot. How many viewers does Catch get? 3 million per episode during the most recent season, their highest ratings yet.

This just doesn’t compute for me. I tried to get an answer from CBS on this, but I haven’t received a reply to my inquiry. It just makes me sad to see crap like Big Brother getting the HD treatment (including the absurd waste of time called Big Brother After Dark on Showtime) while a critically-acclaimed audience favorite in its 15th season doesn’t.
