ABC and Hyperion have announced that, due to the success of Heat Wave, they are planning a second collaboration to bring another Richard Castle book to print. Normally, I wouldn’t mention an announcement like this, but I think there is an important thing to point out here. Broadcast networks are facing more serious competition than ever from cable and online offerings, so I think it’s great to see them getting more creative in the kind of cross-channel partnerships they are developing. Just think, a new show that is trying to build an audience gets a surge when a bestselling book brings an injection of new viewers at the key time when the network is deciding whether or not to pick up the show for the season or renew. This is the kind of innovation that needs to be embraced more if new shows want more than two episodes to prove themselves.
